The Pompadour Lounge was a sophisticated, upscale establishment. The tables were intimately spread out along the perimeter of the dimly lit space, and a large bar sat in the center, serving the finest wine, liquor, and beer. A stage stood off to the side, featuring low-key live entertainment ranging from acoustic sets to light jazz.

Following Hannah through the front door, Jonah immediately felt out of place. He was glad he’d overdressed for the occasion. Glancing at Hannah, he saw her nervously smoothing out her black dress and knew she was feeling the same. Jonah took her by the hand.

“Come on,” he said. “Nathan said they’d be in the back.”

Jonah led Hannah past tables of confident men and women, who smiled as they chatted over their drinks. They didn’t seem to have a care in the world. Jonah wondered what that felt like.

“Hey, you made it.” Nathan grinned, standing to hug Hannah. “Thanks for coming all this way.”

“Oh, it wasn’t a bad ride. Thanks for inviting us,” Hannah said, shaking Kendall’s hand.

“This place is great. It’s our favorite,” Nathan said, waving down a server. He ordered Johnnie Walker Blue “with three ice cubes and a splash of water” for himself and Ciroc and Sprite for Kendall.

“And for you?” the server asked Jonah and Hannah. They exchanged glances, their knowledge of alcoholic drinks barely surpassing beer.

“Just get them what we’re having,” Nathan told the server.

“You got it,” he replied, hurrying off.

Hannah smiled apologetically. “Yeah, sorry. We’re not experienced drinkers.”

“That’s why I invited you out with us tonight,” Nathan remarked.

“To get us drunk?” Jonah joked.

Nathan snickered. “No, so you can loosen up and have some fun. You both need it.”

Hannah nodded in agreement. “Yes. Things have been quite hectic lately.”

The server returned with their drinks, and Nathan watched curiously as they tried his selections. He grinned proudly when they both approved.

“Maybe you’re in the wrong field,” Kendall teased. “You should’ve been a bartender instead.”

Nathan laughed. “Dad would’ve loved that!”

“No, he really would have,” Jonah said, motioning with his hand as if he was tilting back a drink.

“He did love to drink. Maybe that’s where I get it from.” Nathan took a swig from his glass.

Jonah grew quiet for a moment. “So, I met my dad the other day,” he finally said.

Nathan’s eyes widened. “Why didn’t you tell me? How did it go?”

Jonah smiled. “It went very well, actually. He’s a really nice guy.”

“He’s so much like Jonah,” Hannah added. “And he owns a music store.”

“That’s awesome,” Nathan said. “So…do you look like him?”

Jonah looked to Hannah for her input, and she nodded.

“He really does,” she said.

Nathan paused. “This is still so weird to me…I still can’t wrap my head around it.”

“Me neither. You go your whole life thinking one thing, and then suddenly it changes. It’s insane,” Jonah said. He could already feel his drink beginning to affect him.

“So, how are things going with you two?” Kendall chimed in. “I don’t mean to pry, but your story just intrigues me.”

“She’s a journalist,” Nathan said.
